More Bills for Homeowners and Low-income Renters

In a Seattle Times opinion piece King County Assessor John Wilson is promoting a set of bills and constitutional amendments meant to lower property taxes for residents, refund sales taxes for low-income renters and cut personal property taxes for small businesses.

He states, “Most states have some form of a “homestead exemption,” an exemption on primary residences, allowing homeowners to pay at a lower rate than commercial property owners. Washington doesn’t. Working with a statewide bipartisan group of assessors, the bills we are proposing, Senate Bill 6249 and House Bill 2419, would remedy that by giving a tax break to those owning low- and mid-value homes.”

Other bills in the package are SB 6250, HB 2418, HB 1761. All bills may be read and tracked from this link: Bill Information (wa.gov)

Since the major changes require a statewide vote, we will be hearing a lot more about these measures should they make it out of committee.
